Expert advice

Applying fake tan is much easier than you think. If you know what you’re doing you’re sure to achieve great results. So, say goodbye to streaks, patches and tan hands and say hello to tanning perfection!

If you follow a few simple rules you’ll never go wrong. Here’s what experts at St. Moriz say you should and shouldn’t do in order to give yourself a perfect bronze tan.

Do

  • Exfoliate your body as often as possible before you tan
  • Lightly moisturise dry areas of skin; feet, knees, elbows and wrists before tanning
  • Remove any deodorant or make up before you tan, to avoid any green marks appearing
  • Patch test any tanning product at least 24 hours before you use it
  • Play around with products and colours as everybody is different
  • Moisturise regularly once your tan has developed and you’ve showered
  • Shave or wax at least 24 hours before applying fake tan

Don’t

  • Use fake tan when you have broken skin
  • Get dressed right away. Let your tan dry for a couple of minutes
  • Wear light clothes after tanning, stick to something dark and loose to avoid marks
  • Take part in any vigorous exercise immediately after. Phew, what a relief!
  • Worry about making a mistake, you can always remove it with whitening toothpaste!

So that’s the basics covered. But how should you apply your tan to get the best results? Here’s our 5-step guide to applying the perfect fake tan.

1.  Work quickly and apply tan to one area at a time

Start with your feet and work upwards, focusing on applying tan to small sections using sweeping motions.

2. Always use a tanning mitt when you apply fake tan

Using a mitt will really improve your results, giving you a much smoother, streak free tan. You’ll avoid the dreaded ‘tan hands’ too!

3. Leave your hands until last

Use the excess tan on your mitt to apply tan to your hands.  Slightly bend your fingers so your hand looks like a claw and sweep the fake tan over them. If you suffer with really dry hands make sure you moisturise them well before your tanning session.

4. Don’t forget, less is more!

Work on the basis that product the size of a 10p piece should cover one leg. Don’t overload your tan as this can lead to streaks!

5. Apply a little Vaseline to your toenails

This amazing trick stops your nails from staining!

How to get the most out of your tan

Now you’ve got the perfect tan, you look amazing. But how long will it last and what can you do to make it look better for longer?

  • Your tan will last between 5-10 days depending on your skin type.
  • Using moisture lotion can help to prolong the life of your tan.
  • Exfoliate lightly on day 2 or 3 to help your tan fade evenly.
  • Use a bronzer shimmering product to highlight your collarbone and shins, and make your tan even more dazzling
  • Wash-off tan is also a perfect companion to boost your tan when it begins to fade or to give more depth for those all-important occasions

More handy advice

  • If you get any fake tan on your clothes, don’t worry it should easily come out in the wash.
  • Fake tan mousse usually takes about 6-8 hours to develop so you should shower after this time, or if applied before bed, wash the guide colour off in the morning.
  • Don’t worry if some colour washes from your skin whilst showering. This is completely normal.
